The MVSO returns to Kettering Seventh Day Adventist Church with an all-classical program. Leopold Stokowski's arrangement of the Bach Toccata and Fugue was featured in Walt Disney’s "Fantasia", which iconically brings an orchestra to life through powerful visual imagery.
Respighi pays tribute to the Eternal City in his Pines of Rome, where children play beneath the pine groves, strains of Gregorian chant echo deep within the catacombs, and past glories of ancient Roman warriors come to life through colorful orchestration.
Beethoven invites us to escape the burden of daily life and experience the power and beauty of nature in his "Pastoral" symphony. Contrasted against the symbolism of Fate knocking at the door in his 5th, the 6th Symphony gives us insight into the peace that Beethoven sought away from city life, and it seems almost unimaginable that both were composed at the same time. Here again imagery is realized through music, from the serene meadows, scenes of villagers dancing to folk tunes, a storm of cataclysmic proportions, and the theme of thanksgiving after the deluge. Beethoven wrote this description for the first performance. “Pastoral Symphony - or - Recollection of Country Life - More an Expression of Feeling than Painting.”
