MVSO presents an all-classical program, featuring Mozart's Symphony No. 36 and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4.
In the fall of 1783 after a trip to Salzburg, Wolfgang and Constanze Mozart stop in the Austrian city Linz upon invitation from Count Thun-Hohenstein, a long time family friend. Informed that a concert was to take place a few days later Mozart writes to his father "… as I have not a single symphony with me, I am writing a new one at breakneck speed." Composed in a matter of days in time for the performance, Symphony No. 36 (Linz) is every bit as sophisticated as any of his prior or future masterpieces.
The concept of fate has been addressed many times by other composers, yet few have reached the emotional heights achieved by Tchaikovsky. The Fourth Symphony is a battle represented by anguish, urgency, resignation, and finally hope. In Tchaikovsky's words "If within yourself you find no reasons for joy, then look at others… To live is still possible."
