Each piece on this all classical concert tells a story. Grieg's Peer Gynt suite No. 2 features the serene beauty of Solvieg's Song as she expresses her love to him following Peer's stormy journey home on the sea.
Wagner's Flying Dutchman Overture contains the three main themes from the opera – The Dutchman, the sea upon which he is cursed to sail eternally, and the heroine, Senta who makes the ultimate sacrifice and frees him from the curse.
And in Rimsky Korsakov's symphonic suite, which represents his musical vision of "One Thousand and One Nights" the central character, "Scheherazade," is portrayed throughout by the solo violin as she weaves together a series of nightly stories to intrigue the vengeful Sultan Shahriar who, after being convinced of his wives' infidelity vows to kill one of them each night. Scheherazade's storytelling is so masterful that she not only delays her demise but leads the Sultan to renounce his vow entirely, making her his Queen.
